Non-automatic weighing instrument

A non-automatic scale is a scale on which the item to be weighed is manually placed on the platform and removed again. It is used to precisely determine the weight of individual objects at rest.

Non-automatic scales are used in logistics, industry, retail, and laboratories when exact weight measurement is required. The weighing process begins only after the item to be weighed has been fully placed on the scale and ends when it is removed. Unlike automatic scales, weight determination does not take place during a continuous flow of material. Depending on the application, non-automatic scales may be designed to be calibratable and used for measurements relevant to billing.

Practical example:

Before shipping, an employee places a package on a non-automatic scale to accurately determine its weight for shipping documentation and freight billing.

NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program)

The NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) is a U.S. certification program for the testing and approval of measuring instruments intended for use in applications subject to legal metrology requirements. It confirms that a measuring instrument meets the technical and legal requirements for commercial use in the United States.

NTEP is administered by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) and is particularly relevant for scales, dimensioning systems, and DWS systems whose measurement values are used for commercial transactions or freight billing. Successful NTEP certification facilitates the use of measurement systems in the U.S. market and builds confidence in the accuracy, reliability, and compliance of the measurement results.

Practical example:
A logistics company in the U.S. uses an NTEP-certified DWS system to collect weight and volume data in compliance with legal requirements for freight billing.
